How To Become The Perfect Couch Potato

Imagine for a moment that you sit on the couch watching television all day, eating bon-bons, and your weight goes up to five hundred pounds.

Most people think to themselves: “I could/would never do that!”

But in truth they do things that are almost as pronounced.

There is a very real principle in training (and life) called the SAID principle. SAID stands for: specific adaptation to imposed demand. What it means is no matter what you do (or don’t do) will create adaptations in the body. If you are that couch sitter watching television all day, eating bon-bons, you have the perfect fitness for a person sitting on the couch all day that weighs in at five hundred pounds.
What you do has direct consequences on your fitness, movement, and health. So too can what you’re not doing. A simple example might be: you do a lot of running, but don’t stretch out your hamstrings, calves, or abductors (muscles on the outside of the thigh), so that after a few years you have the flexibility of a pressure-treated board.

You get the picture.
As a crafter, chances are you spend several hours per day (or more) sitting in a chair working your particular craft. And after a while, because of the SAID principle, you become “chair shaped.” Your hip flexors constrict and ache, your hamstrings shorten and get tight, your back is rounded and hurts, your head slides forward causing headaches and vision problems, your fingers and wrists are sore, hot, and your fingers are numb. *

You are the “perfect” fitness for a crafter that sits in a chair for hours a day, not moving beyond what it takes to practice your craft.
And, in so many ways, that isn’t enough. Your body and your brain require more. More movement, more stimulus. In a very real way, movement is a type of nutrition for the body (and brain); nutrition for your joints, muscles and connective tissues. Nutrition to build new and stronger neural pathways in the brain – both to keep you younger, as well as to deepen your creative juices and keep your skills strong and growing!

What I’d like you to do is take an honest assessment of yourself. Do you have the skills you’d like to have? The physical capacities to do the things you want to do – pain free, and for hours at a time? Are you strong enough, flexible enough, and have the stamina you need to practice your crafts, and live a happy, healthy, productive life?
